Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE) has host the 1st and 2nd Hong Kong-Macau Ocean Forum on Nov 2022 and July 2023. There were more than 50 experts and scholars gave presentations in previous forums, including number of significance scientists like Chinese Academy of Sciences members. Along with the progressive development of CORE in recent years, the forum has been developed into an iconic and remarkable event in the field of ocean research in GBA.
In upcoming 3rd Hong Kong and Macau Ocean Forum & Areas of Excellence (AoE) Forum. This event will be expanded with the integration of AoE Project: Earth-HK and support by the Department of Ocean Science, HKUST.

Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau
Established on 1 September 2019, Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE) is an international research center for multi-sphere interdisciplinary new regional ocean research in Hong Kong – a bilateral collaboration among Laoshan Laboratory and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). CORE is expected to contribute to the development of marine environment and marine resources, ocean sustainability, forecasting, climate change, and blue economy in Guandong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area(GBA) and Asia-Pacific Region.
The Research Grants Council (RGC)’s Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme project titled “Study of the Regional Earth System for Sustainable Development under Climate Change in the Greater Bay Area (Earth-HK)”, is an interdisciplinary research project funded with HK$87.147 million from RGC. This project consists of 28 professors from nine universities in Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China, and includes 7 renowned outstanding scientists as international advisors. By integrating interdisciplinary perspectives, advanced methodologies, and a world-class research team, this project will provide comprehensive knowledge and science-based mitigation strategies grounded in the human-RES integrated assessment framework to safeguard the environment and the development of the GBA and present a case study for similar bay areas worldwide.
The Department of Ocean Science (OCES) was established in February 2018 with the mission to seek, teach and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans. OCES is the only ocean-focused academic unit in Hong Kong. Our research falls into three focal areas: marine ecology, oceanography, and ocean technology and our research is multi-disciplinary and multi-scale from shallow coastal ocean, marginal sea, open ocean to deep sea, covering ocean environment of the Pearl River Estuary, the China coastal bays, South China Sea and western Pacific Ocean.
